I’ve been feeling stressed lately, so to literally laugh out loud is what I was in search of.

The quest to find something hilarious

I did my usual flipping through Netflix to find a good stand-up comedian or movie comedy. That somewhat worked.

I decided to pay close attention to how many times these shows had me literally laughing out loud. I found some humor to appreciate, but I rarely had a good laugh.

Then, I thought about a time when I had much less responsibility. I went back about 30 years. It helped me remember one of my favorite authors in my 20s, Erma Bombeck.

This was it!

Erma Bombeck published many best sellers, but the one I remember the most is The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank.

I recall loving Erma Bombeck and that she really cracked me up. So I ordered the book! That instantly lifted my spirits. It was fun to anticipate my next book, knowing it would be a fun and easy read.

The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank was published in 1979. I originally read it in 1991. Rereading it over 30 years later gives me a whole new perspective and appreciation for the humor Erma offered her readers.

I love the book more now than I did in my 20s! I wasn’t a mother yet and had very few responsibilities when I read it back then, and I thought it was funny. Somehow, I still related to Erma’s humor.

Maybe because I babysat kids as a teenager and didn’t know how to keep them in line. They ran all over me. (I’m much older and have the skills to command a room of kids now.) But, when I was young, not so much. Erma helped me find the humor in the chaos of managing kids, even before I had my own.

But now, after years of adulting and raising kids, The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank is absolutely hilarious to me! I can relate better now and have more appreciation.

Summary

Reading this book helped me stop obsessing over whatever I was working so hard at. It helped me stop feeling alone in the journey of motherhood and everything else I’m doing to keep my home and family together.

Ah, thank you so much, Erma. I really needed your humor to remind me to stop complaining and have a laugh about it.

Erma Bombeck is a classic. You gotta love her! If you don’t, you sure don’t have to read her stuff. That’s up to you.

I’m looking through the list of all her books, trying to decide which one I’ll go for next. Her entire collection will end up on my shelves.

When I have Erma Bombeck’s collection displayed on my bookshelves, they’ll be my go-to when I need to find a way to literally laugh out loud.

Have a great day!
